Interior Design Ideas For a Living Room

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

A living-room serves as the main room of the house; it serves as a multi-purpose room, which can be used for entertaining guests, to relax or retire at night and read a book, to watch a movie or TV, listen to music and much more. When playing the prime role in the house, a living-room needs to give the impression of a trendy, up-to-date yet extremely comfortable living space.

A living-room plays a number of roles, serving from an in-home movie theatre to a study room, but the most significant role played by a living-room is that of a TV lounge. This is the reason why, most of the time, the main focus while refurbishing a living-room is kept on the television – its position in the living room, the placement of the sofas or couches opposite to it and other aspects regarding the television. This is good if one considers the living-room solely a TV lounge. If a living-room is used as a multi-functional span then before setting it up, every single aspect of the room is to be taken in.

The living-room can be used for entertainment and also for formal occasions. Therefore, interior of living room should be paid special attention. The living-room reflects your personality and has to be decorated and styled according to your comfort and needs. Following are some living-room interior design ideas:

If you have a chimney or fire place area in the sleeping-room, you can make it the centre of the room. Make a small conversation area, using cushions or small tables and chairs in front of the fire place. Place the television and sofa or couch in the other corner of the apartment. Placing lamps in the corner and using large paintings in the rooms will add to the beauty and warmth of the room.

One should use a combination of light and dark contrasting colours but they should not be shocking. Do not use very dark colours on the walls as it will make the apartment space look smaller and congested.

Placing a love seat by the window in the room will make a good small corner for reading too. Placing matching or contrasting rugs in the room will make it more beautiful. Use simple decoration items. There should not be many large decor items; only one centre piece is enough. The centre piece can be placed on the table in the centre of the room.

The large piece used should be sofas, couches, chairs and bookcases. Another good idea to make use of old furniture is by using covers of rich heavy fabrics. One can also paint the furniture of dark wood colour that gives the room a classic look.

Placing fresh indoor plants can also be very useful. Small potted trees and plants in the sitting-room look refreshing to the eyes and also clean the air. Right items like furnishings and decors can greatly improve the interior of your living room if used properly.

Basic Interior Design Principles For Everyday Use in Your Home

Friday, August 6th, 2010

All of these basic principles are used every day by designers all over the world. They are all necessary and often interdependent on each other. When a room fails one or more of these concepts is at fault. Often we can walk into a room, even one we have never been in before and notice that something feels off. This can be a subconscious reaction or very obvious. If you were to use these basic principles as a template for the room, you would easily uncover the problem.

The basic interior design principles are the “tricks” all of us successful designers function with. The careful study and understanding of balance, scale, proportion, rhythm and emphasis is what makes it easy for us to walk into a room and often immediately fix a problem. It is not about taste or personality that creates good design. It is the appropriate application of these design principles.

Balance

Balance is a fundamental of life that everyone seeks, consciously or subconsciously, whether in your checkbook, relationships or home. This makes us comfortable, gives us stability, reduces stress and gives us peace. This is the most important element to achieve when creating or changing the design of a room.

For interiors balance takes into account the physical and/or psychological weight of an object. Balance is important in all facets of room design from the physical architecture to the furnishings, materials selected, and accessorizing.

There are different types of balance:

o Formal or symmetrical – This is very traditional and quiet. The focal point is often in the center. One side is the mirror image of the other. An example would be two sofas on either side of a fireplace facing one another with a large coffee table in the middle.

o Informal or asymmetrical – This is much more active but also more subtle. The focal point may not be in the middle. There is no mirror effect but the visual weights play a more important role. It could be as simple as having two completely different chairs sitting across from one sofa in the previous example.

o Radial – All elements radiate around, toward or from a focal point. There is a lot of repetition in form and color.

Scale and Proportion

Both of these relate to the size and shape of an object.

o Scale deals with the absolute size or character of an object or space when compared to other objects or spaces.

o Proportion is relative describing the ratio of one part to another.

Rhythm

o How objects relate to one another develops rhythm. This works the same way in a home as it does in a piece of music. Rhythm creates interest. It can make an area come alive. Repetition and contrast are key elements to use. A modern example of this would be a room that is mostly one color (monochromatic) and feels very harmonious and comfortable. This is achieved by using different textures and materials of this one color. The mix of textures (contrast) combined with the repetition of color provides rhythm.

Emphasis

o Certain areas or elements of a room need to be dominant or emphasized. Variety will keep an area from being monotonous and dull. The best analogy for this would be a movie. In a movie there are stars, supporting cast members and general cast members. All parts contribute to make a whole and all important to the telling of the story though some are more important / have bigger roles (emphasis) than the others. It doesn’t work if the movie is comprised of all stars, you don’t know who to watch or who is more important.

o A great way to handle this design concept is to make sure everything in your room isn’t a star or your “favorite”. Good design will be achieved when you realize you don’t have to “love” every item or element in your room. Every element has an order of importance, though all are necessary.

o You will achieve this through balancing color, placement, and proportion of items and materials you select.

o Contrasting color is one way to add emphasis to an element. To make a beautiful antique carved fireplace in a deep walnut color the focal point you would want to use a surrounding wall color that would show this off. You wouldn’t want to use a color in a similar hue or saturation because the fireplace would blend into the wall and would become its equal. For the opposite effect, if you had a really ugly nondescript fireplace you may want to make it the same color as the surrounding walls so it seems to go away.

These interior design principles are applicable in every situation regardless of home style. As you may notice none of these have anything to do with taste or money. Good interior design is the clever use and application of these design basics and can be achieved by anyone.

Library Interior Design Planning

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Library interior design or architecture requires detailed planning before plans are drawn. Interior designers can facilitate the planning process if they are skilled in communication and knowledge of the function of a library. The needs of the library patrons must be adhered to when planning the design.

It is important for designers involved in library interior design to be aware of the ambience that the library must convey to its visitors. Many bookstores feature nice comfortable chairs and coffee service enticing visitors to stay longer. In the past, libraries were very sterile and uninviting for many people, especially the younger crowd. How does the modern library compete with the bookstore? The interior designer must use their knowledge of construction and design along with their marketing skills to design a library that can bring in all ages and compete with the modern bookstore/coffee shop.

Some areas the designer may focus on are lighting, acoustics and signage. Library interior design involves designing for different age groups, people who are there for study or research purposes and people who just want to relax with friends and read the paper. Everyone must easily access all products and services offered by the library. Work areas for staff must be ergonomic and functional. Areas for children should include hands on play areas and quiet reading areas for parents and children. The entire facility should be modern and fun. The designer will need to include areas for computer use as well.

An important aspect of library interior design involves the selection of furniture. The furniture must be durable and comfortable. If the library has a set budget, the designer will need to pay close attention to it when selecting furniture. The interior designer will need call on all their supplier contacts to source out the best possible deal for the library in order to stay under budget. There are also commercial manufacturers that design furniture specifically for libraries and other commercial buildings. Interior designers or architects can select standard furniture and then add a custom feature to it to fit the needs of the library design project. Commercial furniture is manufactured to withstand heavy use.

Another aspect of library interior design is a theft detection system must be installed in a strategic location. Staff should have the ability to easily exit from their desk if the theft alarm sounds as well. Other factors involved in the design of the library are related to the specific procedures and policies in place by the library. This is when the interior designer must use their communication skills to plan the design. It can be quite costly to correct mistakes.

Interior designers involved in a library interior design plan, should interview staff members of the library to gain insight into the needs of the staff plus the design of the staff work areas and furniture such as a staff desk. Once the designer has obtained information from the staff, they should then prepare some drawings for staff to review. If the project is quite large then perhaps a mock desk or model could be made for staff to review. Library interior design is one of the many niche areas of designers come across in their professional careers.

Interior Design: Achieving Harmony

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

This is a two part series of articles dealing with creating harmony in interior design.

Harmony is likened to a jigsaw puzzle in interior design. Putting up together a myriad of pieces that seem to be unrelated is an interior designer’s challenge. The designer’s task is to put all the pieces together and come up with a beautiful interior design. Putting the pieces together to produce a harmonious room requires a vivid imagination from the designer. Interior designers develop in their minds a finished picture of what the room will actually looks like after all the pieces are placed together. This mental image usually guides an interior designer on how to execute every move successfully and come up with a design that elicits his or her client’s happy approval.

How do interior designers develop this mental image of a finished picture? There is a basic decorating philosophy that interior designers follow. This is to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative and when it cannot be eliminated, camouflage it. Take for example a room with windows that don’t appeal much to the designer, but since the budget doesn’t warrant the removal of the structure, eliminating the negative is not an option; rather camouflaging the negative becomes the better way out. To come up with a better interior design, usually the designer in this case designs a window treatment that will hide the undesirable feature and make the windows look more attractive.

You may want to redecorate your own home or help a friend create beautiful changes in his or her place. How do you use this philosophy in your own interior designing projects? You should look around the room. Notice any distinctive features and these should include both the good and the bad features. Have a conversation with the room. This could be a good starting point for all your plans. Create a mental image of a finished picture that will terminate in a well-executed interior design of a given room. Look for striking features such as a beautiful view, a fireplace, a sweeping staircase or a distinctive architectural detail. Let’s say you want to change the interior design of your living room. The first thing people will notice when they enter the room is your fireplace. How should you handle this? Is it a good feature or a bad feature? Do you want to accentuate it, eliminate it or camouflage it? Also look out for problem features like badly placed columns or pillars. After identifying these distinctive features, whether bad or good, ask yourself on how to accentuate any good features that you see. For bad features, ask yourself whether to eliminate them or just camouflage them.

After deciding on what to do with the distinctive features of the room, you should realize that you have already started to formulate a picture in your mind of how the finished room will look. From this budding mental image of the room, you will find that other pieces of the puzzle will start fitting right into place and you are on your way to creating a wonderful interior design of any given room and this is just the beginning.

Interior Design Essentials – How Architecture Affects Design

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The architectural of a building or room can have a dramatic affect on its ultimate design. Interior design isn’t always about changing things or creating something brand new. The best designs often take an aspect of the room or building and make them the focal point in order to enhance the style that it already present.

Designers with an eye toward this form of enhancement, and who are willing to step back are likely to succeed in a world of showoffs who care little about the integrity of the design, but only want to be the first to try something new and outlandish.

When trying to design a room, take a good hard look at its architectural design to help set a mood and style. While you may be able to gut an old worn Victorian kitchen and turn into a high-scale modern one, something would definitely be lost. Why not take the opportunity to showcase your talent and ingenuity by trying to capture the essence of the architectural style and taste by preserving the style in a way that still enables the homeowner to enjoy all the modern conveniences of today?

Keep your eye out for unique room dimensions; unusual window casements; intricate moldings and trims; old fireplaces and doors. Sure, it would be easy to rip out (or paint over) and old brick fireplace and replace it with new sleek travertine, but ask yourself firs is something important would be lost if you did.

Too many buildings today are built exactly alike, making the designer’s job more difficult to try and create a unique setting for each homeowners of office. When you are lucky enough to be given the chance to re-do a local artifact, use its unique design and architecture to showcase its beauty – even if doesn’t quite match your personal style.

So, what should you be looking for when doing your initial walk-through for ideas? Here are a few places to start:

Original Fixtures.

Although original lighting and plumbing fixtures can rarely be used as -is, you can either have them refaced, or you can buy new “retro” ones that offer the same style of the originals, but which feature, newer more modern features. The same is true for things like old claw foot bathtubs; sinks and even ovens found in the kitchen.

Woodwork.

Many older homes and buildings sport beautiful woodwork and hardwood flooring. It can be expensive and time consuming to have them redone vs. ripping them out or painting over them, but is well worth the effort.

Large windowsills and older casings.

Preserving older windows can be tricky since there are energy efficiencies to consider. But, it is possible to preserve the same look and feel of the older windows and still be able to attain more modern temperature control.

Classic Colors.

One way to preserve an older style is by using original colors in the rooms and exterior. Research the original time period of the building to see what was popular in its heyday.

How To Solve Any Interior Design Problems That May Arise

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The beauty of interior design for many people is solving any problems that a job may throw up, some of which can be planned for and others which throw themselves up during the job itself. Interior designers have to always expect the unexpected when involved in a job; these are things that interior designers plan and train for. But what about those of us that are not trained in interior design but want to try their hand at an interior design job within their home? How can we approach problems that may arise and what are the best solutions for these problems?

For those of us that are not trained in interior design a job may need doing at home that we would love to have a go at but do not really know where to start, but all is not lost. There are that many reference books, magazines and television programs available today that ideas and problems can be addressed in one form or another. The inter web has many forums and web sites that can be fantastically helpful, these are places where you can post a problem in the form of a question and in turn you will hopefully have some helpful soul post a reply and answer to your problem. The real beauty of these forums is that they are places where like minded people go to socialize and help other people with their interior design problems.

Magazines are also a helpful resource, not only to help with any problems that you may encounter but also to give ideas that may help you avoid a problem. Sometimes a problem can be easily avoided by simply side stepping it completely and replacing the idea with another more manageable solution. Interior design magazines are also helpful as they offer you the chance to actually see many ideas in picture form, ideas that you may have in your head might look completely different in the flesh so it is always an idea to try to seek out any pictorial help available.

Most people are good at some part of the interior design process but interior design covers many different aspects, design, color identification, architectural design as well as placement. But a true interior designer is fully trained in all aspects of this of their profession, the trick to master if you intend carrying out a task yourself is to identify what part of the job you feel most comfortable with and what you feel you may be best at, this way you can narrow down the fields where you may need help and again, where possible, side step any problems that may arise.

If you can for see a problem that may arise and you do not feel comfortable in solving it yourself or the answers that you have been give do not feel right then why not go to speak to an expert. In many cases a local builder’s merchant or plumber’s merchant will be able to offer help and advice or even a product that will solve a problem. For instance, if you are dealing with a bathroom remodeling task and you have hit upon a problem with baths then by consulting the plumber’s merchant or a plumber they may be able to advise you on the best baths design to go for helping you to overcome the problem.

There are many avenues of help available to enable you to complete your interior design tasks it is just a case of approaching each task slowly as they lay ahead of you and take each one step by step. Do not be afraid to ask for help when needed and do not be too proud to accept help when offered. This way you should be able to complete any task with the minimum amount of heart ache.
